The goal of this guided meditation is to introduce you to the mindful state of full presence. This state of presence builds upon more basic meditative skills like the ability to relax and maintain your concentration. Rather than merely being another meditation technique, the goal of this exercise is to achieve a state of unity and self-awareness that can become the foundation for a more meditative and peaceful way of life. Mindfulness meditation is the type of meditation most directly applicable to improving our daily life, and much more information can be found in our Online Mindfulness Course.
As one famous Zen master said, "If you want to control your sheep then give them a large pasture." We eventually learn in our mindfulness practice that our minds work in much the same way. It is an interesting paradox that only by accepting our inner experience as it is can we move beyond the places we are stuck. This does not mean passively accepting the external conditions of our lives! Rather it means seeing the objective truth of things without distortion or denial. And from this level of awareness, the right actions tend to flow naturally.
As each experience that spontaneously arises in our awareness is given room to be whatever it is, our awareness broadens and becomes transparent, peaceful, and clear. Similar to a screen upon which a movie is projected, we eventually discover a dimension of pure awareness or pure presence that is the conscious space in which ALL our experience occurs. This discovery brings a profound sense of peace because this transcendent dimension of pure awareness remains untouched and unaffected by WHATEVER arrises within it.
